ABOUT THE TRAINING
This course is a combination of Advanced Cognitive Interviewing and Forensic Statement Analysis and incorporates both into a standard investigative interviewing format we call the Integrated Behavior Analysis Interviewing Technique.
Cognitive Interviewing teaches the concepts and theories of memory retrieval coupled with a forensic interviewing style and format. Through scientific study it has been found that much more information can be obtained using cognitive interviewing techniques over standard police questioning. If your agency is not using cognitive interviewing techniques you are missing significant amounts of investigative information!
TOPICS INCLUDE:
- The Difficulties of Eyewitness Recall
- How Memory Works
- Principles of Cognition
- Guided Information Retrieval (Core Principal)
- V/W Memory Enhancement
- Communication Enhancement
- Techniques for inducing V/W's to provide more information
- The Worst Interviewing Mistakes
Statement Analysis: When a person gives a narrative statement, it is a direct link into the subconscious of that individual. FSA provides the technology investigators need to determine what a statement actually means; to locate where information has been left out; and to make a number of investigative assumptions derived solely from the suspect's own words. Armed with this information the investigator will be in a better position to employ techniques designed to detect deception and stimulate confessions. Originally designed for the intelligence community, now it's available to local law enforcement officials.
This is not a reading comprehension course. Nor does it improve one's reading or writing skills. It is a course designed to teach the most skilled investigator to analyze statements written by persons involved in criminal offenses. The techniques taught in this class are used by many international police and intelligence gathering organizations.
With these techniques the experienced investigator can determine the validity of witness or suspect statements. The investigator can also gain insight into specific issues of the offense and determine the answers to these questions:
Analyzing a subject's statement before the interview directs the interviewer into areas the subject identifies as potentially fruitful and therefore produces more information in the interview.
- Should the interviewer believe the person?
- Is the writer/speaker more involved in the offense than what s/he has said?
- Is there any relational difficulty evident between the writer/speaker and the other people mentioned in the statement.
- What might be these difficulties be?
- When might those difficulties have begun?
- Did those difficulties contribute to the offense in any way? How? Why?
- Was the writer/speaker actually doing what s/he said at the time of offense?
- Should we consider the writer/speaker a suspect?
Where can you use it: This investigative technique has proven very useful in homicide, sexual assault, robbery, fraud and other serious criminal cases. Some say that it is also one of the most effective ways to detect deception it written and/or oral communications.
Forensic Statement Analysis is applicable in a wide variety of settings in both civil and criminal legal practice. It has been effective in managing negotiations, workman's comp. cases, medical malpractice, managing threatening situations and product liability cases. It is a way to get information from people in a way that they are unable to resist providing.
